Is it possible to use HDHomeRun Dual/Quad tuner device as a DVR without using their subscription? As far I can tell, the DVR recording is going to be local and the device is also local, so what are they selling as part of the subscription?

TIA...

yes.
any DVR software that is compatible w/ the HDHR hardware will work. For example- the Plex DVR...

The HDHR DVR subscription cost (which is very reasonable IMHO) is intended to cover the costs incurred for guide data.

Thanks!

I have used Windows Media Center before -- from XP to Windows 7 and the Guide information was automatically there. I am not sure if the guide information is any more available with Windows since MS had already stopped its Media Center edition. Are there free alternatives to program guide that can be used with Windows 7 Media Center as well as other similar software?

You could investigate what you can get under Kodi ( https://kodi.tv ), since that platform does have a native plugin for HDHR devices.
to the best of my knowledge, nothing really has complete guide data on the totally free end. I believe most are using paid guide data from somewhere.
