You need to upgrade to 1.21 firmware. I can burn @ 4x (with 4X media).

READING @ 2X?? Reading what? DVD or CD?

IMO these dvd-rw (I have dvr-104) are only good for dvd burning....

My cd burn speeds are slow compared to a standard 24-32x cd-rw

My ripping speeds are pathetic to my monster Liteon 163 that average 10-11x on a single layer disk the other day...averaged around 7-8x with Star Wars epsiode 2....

I use a different cd-rw and I use a different dvd-rom drive to rip and load programs as both can read cds faster as well....

An all in one it certainly is not!!!

I pretty much use my 105 for only DVD and CD burning. That is what I bought it for. I also have a Lite-On 163 which is a great drive for reading. My DVR-105 will burn CD's @ 16X which is not as fast as the 40X CDR I had, but in reality, 16x = 5 min 40x = 2 min. Three min of extra CD burn time is not a big deal.

My 104 only does 8x!!!! 16x I could except more and heck even I don't like to burn divx and music cds much past 8x anyways just for safety on crisp good burns.....Data when I am transfering cadd files early in the morning I like the 24x speed plus....

I have this drive and yes it is locked at 2x ripping. This was a feature implemented by pioneer. :(

When I had the CDR (Lite-On), I wished it had 1X. 4x was minimum burn speed. Burning SVCD's @ high speeds caused them to stutter when played in my home DVD player. Slowing down to a 4X burn speed fixed the problem, but I would have burned them @ 1X if I could. Now that I have the DVD-R, I'm not making SVCD's anymore, so it no longer matters.

I hear ya...I no longer make Divx movies for the time being....I still like the faster cd burns for mass data transfering, but even at 8x it is livable....

Yeah my DVD of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers looks pretty good!!!:)

Last time I checked it was the best at ripping dvds.....16x48 model and dvd-roms have pretty much stopped at 16x level....I haven't heard of anything newer or faster....

Yes...speeds of up to 44x during dae ripping...I think that used to be 3rd fastest among cd-roms/dvd-roms and storagereview.com
