NOTE: I added to cart, then tried to check out, and it said not available. I re-tried to add and check out an additional 3 times, and it finally worked, so KEEP trying!, seems to go in and out of stock, even though the page says its in-stock.

If it's refurbished, please state that in your post. Their website is undergoing maintenance right now.

Hopefully this deal works, I have this player and it is pretty good. Audio output is kind of weak, CD playback quality is terrible. But plays damn near every burned video (Divx, Xvid, etc) I've thrown at it; only trouble is with a dual layer DVD that has several dozen individual videos in folders. Doesn't work with that, but that's the only issue I had.

It's truly out of stock. Also, someone called them and they said that everything sold in the outlet store is factory renewed. They sell the same player brand new in their regular store for 59.99. Makes no sense that they would also sell new ones in the outlet for 29.99.

I'm not sure what you mean by that -- I'm sure it measures nearly perfectly via analog out, as do most decent DVD players. But if you have any audiophile leanings, you should be using the digital out. (And probably not using a $60 player.)

Audio/video magazines rarely measure DVD players' audio output any more, as it is going to be 20-20k +/- 0.1dB, 100+dB s/n, 100+dB dynamic range, etc. -- there's just no way to differentiate players on that basis.

The ergonomics on this particular player are not the best, and I think the remote sucks. I keep pressing chapter skip when I mean to scan forward/back. You might have to get an all-in-one replacement remote. The mpeg4 capability is the DVP642's selling point. My current fave mpeg4 player is the LiteOn recorder that OfficeMax has for $100 (and frequently on sale). It plays a fair number of things that the Philips does not. But whether you pay $30, $50, or $60, the Philips is still a good buy for what you get, and I own two of them.

Btw, the typical mpeg4 .avi looks much better on a TV than fullscreen on a computer monitor. The TV's lack of resolution actually helps to smooth things out.
