DVI?

What are the advantages of using DVI over I guess... VGA connectors with you monitor. My dad just bought a LCD with DVI, but no DVI output card. We're thinking about buying an ATI 7000 PCI to give him DVI. Is it worth it for $50? Is it just better quality or are there other advantages?

DVI has advantages in that the geometry will be flawless and things will appear sharper. Some people say that it's a night and day difference. Other people say that it's only really noticeable if you look at them side by side. Most will agree that it is a noticeable difference. That said, my LCDs @ work are all analog and they look nice to me. I would probably buy the card from somewhere with a no-nonsense return policy. This will let your own eyes be the judge as to whether it's worth $50.

Good reply, thanks. Makes sense to go ahead and get the card. Why my dad needs a 3 monitor setup, I don't know. But I learned a while ago to just let him buy whatever he wants because that just means more toys for me to play with. 😀

As said, DVI produces a flawless picture with no adjustment required or even possible except for brightness and contrast. It will also allow disabling driver scaling so that, for instance, 1280x960 can be displayed on a 1280x1024 display for distortion-free gaming.

My own personal experience with both analogue & DVI mode on my Samsung 191T monitor, analogue was pretty good but with DVI it`s a no contest win, also DVI helps in gaming (helps reduce ghosting) .Main thing with DVI is everything looks sharper ,crisper IMHO.

it completely depends on the quality of the analog out on your video card. i've had some cards where it looked like night and day dvi vs analog (old geforce2mx for example). most newer cards you probably wont notice unless you have bad interferance or very badly shileded vga cables.
