DVI - worth it?

Hmm...at this stage I'm probably tossing up between a 19" LCD or 17" LCD DVI.....

And I'm starting to think the smaller, higher quality one might be worth it........

Yes, definitely sharper picture and makes you independent from RAMDAC / AD converter quality and noise.

do you actually have any links to screenshots that prove this?

I've seen FAR crisper images on High end VGA CRTs than i see on those big ass DVI dell LCDS personally, so i severely doubt the picture is as clear cut as you make out. One i have compared IRL with both is my mates Benq 17' LCD, which has both outs, and neither of us can tell the difference between them...driven off a 9600XT...

If you really can see it may be subject to the individual setup, but for sure you eliminate a lot of potential for getting a sub-optimal picture when using DVI-D. If using analog you are dependent on the quality of the (useless) DA/AD conversion, the cable, manual picture adjustments required, etc. DVI-D is just the easy route to go...
I personally use a BENQ FP783 which also has two ins. I can tell the difference with the 6600GT.
Where I could not clearly tell is when I hooked up my old studio rig with the Voodoo3, one of the best quality 2D output cards evar... 😉
