Question for those who have a DisplayPort output on their system:

Is your DisplayPort output dual-mode DisplayPort (can drive DVI signaling with passive adapter) or just DisplayPort (no dual-mode) ?

Thanks for the input.

I don't think there is such a thing as dual-mode DisplayPort. It is either DisplayPort or DisplayPort 1.2 with both being able to support resolutions up to 2560x1600 @ 60Hz. But if you are looking for a DisplayPort to DVI adapter these are the basics:

For support for monitors that are 1920x1200 and 1920x1080 you will just need a passive Displayport to DVI adapter.

For support for monitors that are 2560x1440 or higher you will need an active DisplayPort to Dual-Link DV adapter.

P.S. I claim this lurker!

Thanks for the reply.

It's dual-mode DisplayPort allows backward compatibility with DVI via a simple passive adapter.

I'm trying to determine whether any random DP video source I wind up with supports DP dual-mode (meaning the passive adapter works) or whether their relying on a seperate DVI output for that support. I've been out of the video card market for a while :)

For what it's worth, my Laptop (Thinkpad x220) has a DP++ port, the dual mode DP that you're referring to.

When in doubt, use an active adapter. But I've yet to see a DisplayPort equipped PC that didn't work with a passive adapter, so long as the necessary TMDS transmitters weren't already in use elsewhere. This goes for AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA. If you tell us more about the hardware, we may be able to give you a more definite answer.

I don't think a passive displayport adapter can support 1920x1200?
Yes, it can. It would be equivalent to SL-DVI.
