DVI to VGA dongle?

I've got a Radeon 8500 LE/LE (The one from NewEgg) that I flashed to retail specs. Some people have said that I need the DVI to VGA dongle made specifically for that card for it to work right. Is this true, and why? I'm interested in getting one but I want to know if I can just get any old one or if I need to hunt down one for my card. Thanks.
