I am planning to build an HTPC and have a question. I have a free HDMI port on my TV so can I buy a video card with DVI out and use a DVI to HDMI adapter to hook up the PC to the TV? I could use S-video but was thinking this might provide better video quality. Thanks!

The DVI-to-HDMI will indeed provide MUCH better quality than S-Video. That's the route I took when hooking up my computer to my LCD TV and it looks fantastic. If your TV has a VGA input I would use that though, to save yourself the HDMI port for another piece of hardware (if you have any).

It does not have a VGA input. By the time I am ready to use HDMI (Blu-ray or HD DVD player) I will have a new TV with more inputs. So the DVI to HDMI adapter will work?

HDMI technically is DVI plus digital audio on a handy plug shape. So yes, for the video part, that'll work just fine ... when both ends support it, even with HDCP encryption.
