DVI really DVI?

I'm just wondering.... do video cards that support DVI send a direct digital signal to the DVI output?
Or does it just take the analog signal it creates in the end (for the normal VGA output) and convert it to digital so the card supports DVI?
 
i believe it is a true digital signal
i am pretty sure anymore all video cards make the digital then convert to analog...
i may be wrong someone yell at me when i am 🙂
