DVI Output to VGA Input Help?

I have a cable box that has a dvi output located on it and I would like to try to connect it to a vga monitor to watch some hi definiton programming. I am wondering if this is possible without a real expensive transcoder. Can a dvi signal be converted to vga? Thanks, Rob

depends on what dvi connector it is.

I'll have to check what type it is. It is on a motorola dvr cable box.

Also one more question. Can you get hdtv content over component cables or do you need dvi/vga/hdmi to achieve hdtv output?
