Thanks nebor and fredtam, I'll work out whether I have enough money for the dvi connection otherwise I'll buy the analog one...
The reason why I asked this question is because one of anand's own editor (they are wearing a white anandtech shirt for their icon) said that the difference is night and day...
it's in here somewhere.

fwiw, i have seen quite dramatic differences between dvi and vga inputs on lcd screens. it varries between pretty close to quite dramatic depending on the lcd monitor and associated hardware.
i actually wont get a non dvi lcd monitor now. but that's just my opinion.

The NEC Nebor mentioned uses the same panel as the Hitachi I mentioned earlier. The Hitachi is only $50 more and has dvi.
tend to agree with the night and day thing.
My Samsung 191T looks massively worse if I don't use the DVI. I would NEVER get an LCD that wasn't DVI.

when you say massively worse, do you mean worse as in going-from-geforce2mx-to-radeon-9800xt kinda worse, or just going-from-using-rgb-rather-than-dvdinput kinda worse...
Cause I think I can live with the second one...
And also: is just an improvement over brightness and contrast, or do you see less ghosting, and shadowing?
Any input would be greatly appreciated
