DVI issue with Samsung 206BW

I just got this monitor two days ago and it works perfectly through VGA but when using DVI it blanks for a second about every few minute when doing something intensive like a game but hardly at all in windows. The rate of blanking increases the longer the game is running.

Some googling suggested this might have to do with single link DVI not being able to handle the frequency. I enabled the "reduce DVI frequency" option and that improved it but did not eliminate the problem.

The monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050 which is within the single link DVI limit even without the reduced frequency so could this be caused by something else? Is it possible there is an issue with my video card (ATI x700 Mobility) handling the DVI output?

Thanks in advance for any help.
