DVI-I to VGA adapter causes bad image quality?

I have no intention of getting a new LCD for my new rig. I really want to get a 6800GT PCIe instead of the X800 XL (Quake4, RTCW2, COD2 big draws). But the 6800GT hasn't got a D-Sub (VGA) connector - instead it comes with DVI-to-VGA adapter for use with CRTs.

I plan to use my monitor @ 1280x960 and above 85 Hertz. I have heard that DVI-to-VGA converter causes image corruption at high resolutions like 1600x1200. What do you guys think? Particularly at the resolution and refresh rate I want to use. Will the IQ be affected?

Thanks :)

I have yet to see a DVI-VGA adapter do something bad to the signal. It's not converting anything, it's just wiring from one kind of connector to the other.

I HAVE seen plenty of cards that had poor analog signal quality on the DVI plug to begin with. Good luck.

In that case lots of people must have bought the eVGA 6800GT PCI-e and used it with a CRT. What can you guys report about the image quality at high-res and refresh rate from this card using a DVI to VGA adapter?

The DVI signal has the analog signal carried as part of it. The adapter just maps the signal that's already there to the right connector. It shouldn't make any difference at all.
