I have a dual monitors that have a DVI-I cables. I am looking at a new video card that has both DVI-I and DVI-D connectors. Will a DVI-I cable connect to a DVI-D port? There is some confusing information out there.

The question is are you willing to spend an extra $2 to buy some replacement cables for your monitors, so you can use DVI-D cables so that it doesn't matter which kind of port the video card has?

Or, maybe you can disconnect the cables... look at both ends of the cable, is one end DVI-D and the other end DVI-I (then use the DVI-I end on the monitor side and use the DVI-D end on the video card side).

The DVI-I cable has extra prongs sticking out of it. So it looks like: %

The DVI-D port will not have holes for those extra prongs. So it looks like: /

You can stick the / prong of the DVI-D cable into a % of a DVI-I port.
But you can't stick the % prong of the DVI-I cable into a / of a DVI-D port.

There is a nice pic in another thread around here, or maybe do a google image search for DVI-D and DVI-I... wait here it is:

NO, because DVI-I has a few extra pins.

You will need to plug such a cable into a DVI-I port. You could also plug a "male DVI-D to female DVI-I adapter" (like this) into the graphics card and then you'd have a DVI-I port
