Not real sure where to post this one, so it sounds kind of hardware oriented.

I recently bought a big screen tv with hdtv compatibility. They sold me a dvd player with a dvi-d output that hooks up to the tv under the guise that the picture was the best it could be (short of optical I guess).

Well its not. The picture is really grainy and there is no true black. I compared this to the normal rgb connections and the s-video connections. So far the s-video is the best, but am I missing something.

The tv and the dvd are in 1080i standard mode. I have tried several movies, and still the s-video is better than the dvi-d video. I even changed dvi-d cables, nothing.

Any ideas ?

Well, the DVI picture shows you how the images on retail DVD media really is - low resolution, 720x480. Yes that's going to look awful on big screens, unless you blur and smear the pixels a bit - which is exactly what the low-bandwidth analog signal path SVideo is doing for you.

Thats why I bought the Samsung HD931, upconverts dvd's to 1080i. And they look fantastic.

Try setting the TV to 540p or 720p and toggling DVD progressive output to see which is best.

SOLUTION !!

This is really stoopid, but it was the problem.

My dvd player was set on 4:3 and the tv was set on 16:9. So the picture was shredded. It looks Awesome now.

Thanks for all your help.
