DVI connection locks me in 60 Hz

Heya all,

When I use the DVI connection on the back of my Geforce4 Ti4200 with my Planar PX171M, I am locked at 60 Hz. When I use the analog connection, I can actually go up to the normal 75 Hz. I've even tried it with my older Intel 740 16 meg vid card and that does 75 Hz just fine at 1280 x 1024. I've tried changing the refresh rates to ones that are not supported by the monitor. I've also tried reforce and that still doesn't work. Can anyone help? Thanks. Heiwa j0!

An LCD monitor does not function the same as a CRT with respect to refresh rate. Since individual pixels can be toggled off and on in any order with an LCD there is no reason to refresh the entire screen which is what in a sense the refresh rate on a CRT is doing.

the shimmering you're associating with refresh being too low tends to be a vsync problem in most cases. my LCD "shimmers" at 60 but is fine at anything above 72.

Actually, check out www.overclockers.com about this. They recently have had a series of articles on the DVI connection. Basically its a bandwidth problem that will likely be resolved through a new standard being released later this year. That said, a refresh rate of 60 on an LCD is different than one on a CRT, but it can have some impact in certain extreme circumstances.

heya all

Cool cool, thanks a lot all. I still sort of do notice a diff between the analog 75 and the digital 60, but if this is the standard, I guess I'm stuck. Thanks again, heiwa j0!.

Hmm, so with this new DVI v2 standard, would I be able to run (the successor to) the IBM T221 fullscreen at 60Hz with only one cable, as opposed to the 4 DVI cables required now to reach only 41Hz? ;)
