DVI -> Component or VGA -> Component

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I couldn't find a relevant topic for it.

I just bought an older HDTV (38" CRT) off of craigslist and want to get my current PC set up as a HTPC. My current PC is the ASUS M2A-MV (The non-HDMI version) and it has both DVI and VGA video outputs and uses the AMD 690G chipset. However my current TV only has Component as the best quality input (I also have composite and S-Video).

So my question is what would be the best video setup I can get out of this?

Get a new video card for component output. Get a good one. The cheap ones work worth crap. Last I've tried is component outputs from a 6200 agp card, and an integrated 6150 board, and the performance was horrible. Not even talking 3D performance, but just using the desktop was not good. Get at least a mid-range card, 7600, maybe x1600. Check reviews.

Are you sure you know what you are talking about?!?!

If you can you can try and get a VGA>component cable from monoprice, if it doesn't work at first and is a weird color over the whole screen then see if your TV has a color spacing option in it's menu.

Yeah, I was confused at what cubby was talking about too.

I've seen DVI -> Component adapters also so VGA -> Component is better?

a standard DVI connection on a computer carries not just the digital signal, but also an analog VGA signal. a DVI -> component adapter uses just the analog VGA signal of the DVI interface. or, as PurdueRy said, they're the same.

This cable is primarily used for connecting video projectors with Component-in capability through it's VGA port. It can only function with a VGA port that is either able to recieve or transmit Component signals (Y, Pr, Pb).

So the question goes back, does this motherboard support component out through the vga port? I don't know, but I highly, *highly*, doubt it. These are not universal cables, people, they only work on very specific hardware built to support component output.

These "adapters" are similar to the cables used in many of the new kvm switches, if any of you have a newer one. On one end of the cable is the standard vga, ps/2 keyboard, and ps/2 mouse. *But* on the other end is *just* a vga connector. You certainly can't hook this cable up to just any vga device and expect to have keyboard and mouse control as well. It's because the kvm switch is specifically designed for this cable.

Just like any vga > component or dvi > component adapters, the hardware must be specifically designed for such an adapter.
