DVI <-> component adapter for connection to hdtv

I know ATI makes one, see it all over ebay for about $15 - $20 including shipping..

Can I make one? I have a DVI-A to VGA adapter and a VGA cable and I have the component ends I desoldered from an old switch I had around here.
I'm doing this mainly for the knowledge & understanding, not because I'm a cheap basta_d 😉

I know the signal would be crap after all these connections, I just want to get it to work while the one that I order is being shipped. I have this crazy DIY urge, I'm sure some of you understand. 😉
 
So will this only work with an ATI card?
I've got an Nvidia 5900 - do I have to use a transcoder to do the same thing?
 
It's the _card_ who generates the component signal. The adapter "does" nothing, it merely changes the connector shape from DVI to three-cinch.
 
well I hooked it up but got no display, I suppose the 5900 just doesn't output component

Then again, maybe if I tell the nvidia properties it's a tv it would work?

I'm pretty sure it won't work; see Peter's response. The ATI adapter works only with ATI cards that can specifically output component signals over the analog connection (including the analog part of the DVI-I signal). You would need a transcoder for that to work with almost any Nvidia card, and that would cost way more than it's worth, from what I've seen.

Edit: Upon re-reading, I see that you weren't using the ATI adapter...but the point still stands. The card needs to be able to generate a component signal, and most of the Nvidia ones don't. 😛

Which sucks... because I wanted a 6800gt but ended up with a 6600gt to get component out 🙁
