DVI cable question

Zoinks

Senior member
Can someone give me a quick fill in on digital monitor cable/connections. Work gave me a Dell 1900 in exchange for a Sony SDM-M81 monitor. But I can't plug the existing cable from my computer into the new monitor. The Dell does not have holes for the 4 pins next to the bar. Why would that be? Can I just go out and buy the right cable? What kind of cable would that be?

Your diagram confuses me, but all you should need is a DVI-D cable.

Perhaps somehow you had a DVI-I cable 😕

Sounds like you got a DVI-I cable which supports both DVI and analog (VGA) signals; the 4 pins and the bar are for analog signals only. What you want is a DVI-D cable, a DVI cable with only the digital pins.
