DVI and VGA??? please help me clarify

Hi people

I have just bourght a Geforce4 Ti4200 card and already have a compaq TFT5010 monitor.

The card has DVI (new DVI connector) and VGA/DVI output (old style VGA connector) - and my tft can automatically choose DVI or VGA through its old style connector.

Can I use the normal VGA cable to connect the GF4 VGA/DVI to the TFT? Or should my monitor have a specific DVI connection?
(my Dell flat screen at work has one for VGA and one for DVI)
