dvi and d-sub, whats the difference

rise

i searched this here and on google, google responses just confused me with too much tech info.
i'm looking for a 19" lcd and i understand over 17" i should go with dvi. what does d-sub do? is there a simple explanation to the differences?

D-sub is just fancy-talk for your standard 15-pin every-day analog monitor connector you've been using for 20 years.

DVI is the "new" thing and a must for anyone who wants the best hookup between your computer and LCD monitor.

Some cheap LCD's only have D-Sub (analog) connectors, while your better LCDs will offer both D-sub and DVI.

And just to add more info here:

There are two DVI type connectors (on video cards). DVI-D which only has the digital signals, and DVI-I which has a few extra pins for the analog VGA signals. This makes the DVI-VGA adapters possible.
Be aware of this when you buy a video card. A video card with DVI-I will come with adapters and you can use it with your CRT.

thank god, simple explanations! thank you guys!

speaking of that asapter, i have a 6800gt that i tried using on my old viewsonic crt and got just a black screen. it was late so i didn't even bother with it. is there a reason it wouldn't work? a setting i need to change?
