Say you ripped a DVD with DVD Decryptor and then you take those files and then compress or do whatever with Shrink. How fast is your "Rate:" when you use Shrink? Mine is not even 6x and this is reading it from my Maxtor Maxline III 300GB SATA hard drive. Is there something wrong? Reading it from my DVD burner is faster than this.

It depends on how much compression and what options you're selecting. Did you disable low priority mode?

What's your CPU?

I'm doing a test right now on a P4 3Ghz. The analyzing stage was running at 14,700KB/s.
The compression part was running at 10,600KB/s.

why are you using DVD Decryptor? DVDShrink can do it all for you, assuming your're trying to copy a disc...

and doing this (depending on your cpu) like me with a 2.1ghz system i can copy a 4.5gb dvd in about 40 minutes (thats decryption time plus burn)

Shrink messes up ripping a fair number of DVDs. quits with errors and such. I always use Decrypter to rip first to avoid that problem. It's a known issue, many folks suggest doing it this way.

edit: in response to the OP. Ripping with Decrypter can be slow sometimes. I'm not sure why. The actual shrink part totally depends no how fast your system is though. I have my drives setup as a RAID stripe, so it has faster access to the data, plus I am running my XP Mobile CPU at 2.4ghz. I can run through most DVDs pretty quickly, maybe 20 or 30 minutes I suppose. I don't watch, I usually start and walk away. I do all mine in stages too, so don't really keep track of total time needed.

I always use Shrink to create a .ISO file of the source DVD after Decrypt. Then it is usually a faster burn in the final stage - also easier to make additional copies.

DVDshrink is infamous for being an awful ripper by itself... I'd take the extra step and rip using either DVDdecrypter or DVDfab decrypter... Youre sure to have a solid rip.

bob4432 and ZimZum, do you use the older, freeware version, or the Pro incarnation of DVD-RB?

In my experience, I'd say DVD Shrink (latest version) was quite decent when it came to re-encoding DVDs, as long as they were not terribly complicated. Some people say DVDShrink should not go under 80%, but I've seen great results at 60%, in the case of several Paramount barebone titles which are nevertheless over 7.5 GB in size, ("An Officer and a Gentleman" comes to mind)... I mean, it's quite obvious that a movie under 2 hours, with a small, static menu, and no additional sound tracks will compress quite well to 4.5 GB...

Of course, "Deep Analysis" should ALWAYS be used...

As for ripping, my experience of over 3 years in this field has led me to believe nothing is better than DVD Decrypter, and that DVDShrink should not be used for decrypting to HD... unless you like occasional glitches and blocking in your backed-up DVD.

i use the current free version dvd-rb and have never had a problem with any backups of dvds to hd with shrink. basically if i go under 80% with shrink, i use dvd-rb as it takes about 2hrs vs 40mins but the quality is amazing when you need to go down to 50-60% on long movies live braveheart, gladiator, etc.

See my sig for teh link to DVD-RB.

Even if you aren't comfortable with buying CCE or "acquiring" CCE, the HC Encoder that comes with DVD-RB is still better than DVD Shrink.

Shrink has some options that are nice, but as soon as you go below 70%, the quality is generally crap.

With DVD-RB + CCE, quality is superb, even at 50%, & okay even lower :D

I don't bother with DVD-RB Pro, since i always seem to have trouble with it, & teh free one works great for me.

I rip with DVD Decrypter & re-encode with DVD-RB + CCE with CCETargetSectors = 2245000, & that gives me a beautiful 4.35 GB nearly every time.
