DVDShrink for Ubuntu 9.10

What app is most like DVDShrink, where I can view the entire DVD structure and take out what I don't want?

DVD Shrink running under Wine. That would be about as close as you can get 😉

You can also look at Handbrake.

I've played with Handbrake and it will force you to re-encode the video (from what I can tell...others may show another way to do it).

So if you don't want to lose quality, I would try to use DVD shrink. If you just want to remove extras, DVDFab HD will run under Wine, too.

mencoder ftw, but it is all CLI. There are some guides to compile the SVN build on the ubuntu forums. After that you can use apps like dvdrip or ogmrip.

Oh wait I just reread the OP. I think to do it in native linux applications you would need to rip it to mpeg2 with the ripper and then use DVD Styler to pack them back into an iso. Not as efficient as DVDShrink

My solution is ending up like this. VirtualBox using CD/DVD passthrough. I chose this because I also want to use Netflix and need the Windows install anyways.

I've had some success with dvd::rip. I don't burn iso's anymore so I'm not up on what is current. Now I just rip to disk and stream to my ps3.

Id like to know how well that works for streaming video

I think he's talking about using virtualbox only for a windows guest environment to run DVDshrink. Most vms only support 16-bit audio afaik. so you would want to stream it from the host if you were doing that.

I've got no complaints ripping with mencoder to avi's and serving the videos with samba. I havent tried it streaming remotely over ssh, the quality of your experience would depend on your connection speeds and your bitrate.

I'll let you know. It may end up being arse, but it's fun to try. I'm looking at a PS3 solution also to run the HT. To many choices, but none involve linux for everything, damn you MS!
