The other day someone in my house set my dvd storage folder on top of my powered sub-woofer.
I moved it and it doesnt seem to have hurt anything.
Will magnets hurt a cd or dvd like it will video tape?

Yes, a magnetic field can possibly alter/damage the data on a CD/DVD, however, it would have to be in close proximity.

No way. The recording dyes used have no magentic properties, so no possible effect. Even with magnetic media there would be little effect unless the magnetic field was fluctuating (large speaker being used or electrical motor in use - both would need to be unshielded).

Short answer no. And certainly not by just laying them on top of a sub.

You would have to use an enormous magnet and spin the disks so as to produce an eddy current in the aluminium layer to damage them.
