dvdrw drive in laptop issue....

I have recently ran into a problem with my dvdrw drive in my laptop, it simply cannot burn cds anymore, it can read any cd even burnt ones and rws, it can read dvds even burnt ones, and it can even burn dvds, but for whatever reason cds are a no go. I have reinstalled windows using the accompanied restore discs, just a regular copy of windows, and even loaded ubuntu to see if it was windows specific. nothing worked. When i try to burn with windows burning program it stops at the last 5 seconds pauses then gives the choice to delete temporary files, eject and try again, or save temporary files for later use. With NTI it starts to burn then gives an error, Nero does a similar thing starts then gives an error. Any ideas ? I was thinking possibly firmware but i can't find any for the dvr-k15ra. Any one have had similar problems etc?

Could try a cd/dvd cleaner disc, but it does sound like the drive is kaput.
