Toshiba DVD-Rom SD-M1402, suppose to be 16x dvd and ~40x cd
Yamaha CRW2100E, 16x10x40 CDR

mobo=Abit KT7 raid, each drive as master on separate IDE channels
cpu=duron 800
Win2k, Ultra DMA enabled on both.

before, when i use the dvdrom to create an image of a full cd, it used to take only 2-3 mins. and about 5 mins to write with the cdr. however, for a while now, it takes over 10 mins to read a full cd with the dvdrom. i tested the same cd on the cdr drive and it took 2.5 mins. when i rip a dvd, it did it at the same speed as before, about 8 or 9 mins. i dunno what the problem is or how to fix it...besides using the cdr to read from now on or buying a new dvdrom, any help is appreciated

Are you talking about pure reads or like when you install stuff off the drive. It can take longer to install programs off a cd because they are commonly compressed and so you are not actually measuring the real read speed. So it might take longer than 4-5 minutes to install an application than it takes to burn it these days (4-5 minutes with a 24x burner).

Oh, and a good way to check if there is something wrong would be to try whatever it is that you are trying to read on the burner since they are rated at the same read speed. Cheers.

The Toshiba DVD's are very slow at DAE extraction, under 6X, thats why I dumped mine and got a 16X liteon. DAE is now over 30X.
