DVDR-W drive won't work properly in my system

I just got my Sony DW-U14A DVD+-RW drive and it records properly in another system but not in mine. In my system, it can read discs just fine. However, I cannot burn a disc. I have tested it with Nero 6 and its included NTI DVD Maker software. With NTI the application freezes if I try to burn, with Nero 6 the app will either freeze, or it will burn and then fail the data verification. I have tried different ports and IDE cables. I'm running Windows 2000 SP4, with a Gigabyte 7DXR. If I had to guess I would blame the motherboard. Any ideas/suggestions?

Well, I did something drastic -- I removed all unnecessary hardware (sound cards, network, tv tuner, etc) and reinstalled Windows. Now the DVD burner works like a champ. So I'm in the process of adding hardware and software back in, and test-burning at each step to see where the problem lies.
