DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW

I'm having a hard time determining what the differences are and what I should buy. I'd like to be able to use the drive for data archiving and I'd also like to convert home movies to DVD to be watched in a standard DVD player.

Any suggestions, or links for more info?

Thanks.

DVD-RAM, normal dvd drive
DVD-R, a dvd writer
DVD-RW a dvd rewriter
DVD+RW probably a dvdrewriter and stuff

Just buy a normal dvd-ram drive, when doing the home movies thing, convert them to vcd or svcd so you can play on your dvd player, dont need a dvd writer for that, just a normal cd writer.

I thought DVD-ROM was a normal DVD drive.
What is a DVD rewriter and stuff?
I want DVD because of the amount of storage.

I have done some research. If you don't know what you are talking about, please don't respond.

I would not recomend that people buy a dvd writer or a rewriter at the time because each normal writable dvd disc costs about $20.

And no need to be so hostile, I'm only trying to help. I know what I'm talking about :|

Right now there is 3 different types of writers (RAM, -R, +R). They are still fighting to determine what will be the standard. Czar is wrong at the $20 price. You can get DVD-Rs for around $5 to $10 dollars. I have a Pioneer DVD-R and it is great. I use it for large storage and backing up my PS2 games. Also a side note.. When drives write at 2X in DVD it is really about 20X compared to a CDR. They use a different type of system to rate speed with. If you are looking to get mass starage these are a good way to go. You can get 4.7 gigs on a DVD-R.

Hope this helps ;),
