Anyone know what the future holds for DVD writers or current technology? I have been looking for one but the writing speed is simply not there yet.

don't forget that a 1x dvd is equal to a 8x cdr and that a 2x dvd = a 16x cdr
and that it's supposed to take an hour to burn a dvd
but give them time as it's still new ;)

Do you guys ever think that DVD burners will ever get to the point where today's CDRs are? I mean a single blank DVD is like $10-15 while a pack of 50 CDRs is $10-15...

MisterMe, probably not to be honest. Technology tends to either go up in price or remain the same for years, especially as demand increases and production costs decrease.

Seriously though, it shouldn't take much thought to realize DVD authoring will (and has) followed a somewhat similar path as CD authoring technology. Cheaper disks, faster burners, etc... I remember when 2x CD-R writing was insanely fast and I envied a friend of mine who had one while I didn't... Grrrr!

I'm still not sure about the DVD stuff though. I really want to bite now, but I'm not very satisfied that there is the whole '-' clan and the '+' clan... I would feel a lot more comfortable if there was a single DVD burning technology. But that's probably just me. Cheers!

Sorry for the double post, I can't maintain a session for some reason at work...

Anyway, if you're paying $10-15/DVD-R disk, you're probably getting ripped off. A little searching found a 2-sided DVD-R (9.4GB total) disk for $5.99:

Don't know if they're a trustworthy operation, but it's about half of what you expect DVD-R's to cost for double the storage you normally see :) L8R

The Apple branded stuff (supposedly among the best) is listed at $5 each, for 2X media. That's like 7 discs worth of 16X CD-R media, or $0.70 per CD-R.

Wow! I guess the prices are falling faster than I thought. I never really checked lately - just figured they were still waaaay expensive. Also a great breakdown by Eug in regard to prices per meg. Maybe this stuff is starting to get to the point where a mere mortal might start considering it...
