DVD-writer???

I know that Best Buy sells blank DVD disks, but don't you need a DVD writer to write to them???? Where the heck can I find one, or are they still basically all exclusive to Aisa???

I'm from Canada as well, and haven't seen a hint of any up here, so I'd probably have to order online/phone.

TIA

Sort of like what CD-R's were like a few years ago.

I remember when CD-R's sold for $3000 each....now with the introduction of a new storage medium the price is already 1/6 of that, so expect them to drop in price over the next year or so.

I have seen a drive that does DVD-R, CD-R and even CD-RW (I think)

for $999

can't wait for that to drop about $600 in price

There are two types of DVD 'writers'. The less expensive one is the DVD-RAM which you can find for as little as $280 (I saw the creative labs version for this price a few years ago on a site).. These (as far as I can remember when I looked into it) had a maximum of 3.2GB/each side of the dvd disk, but can ONLY write data, not actual DVDs.
The second version (and much more expensive, ~$3000) is a DVD-R which can write DVDs (movies) or data dvds. These were supposovely coming down in price, but as far as I can tell they aren't coming down very fast...

dvd-r is write once.

dvd-rw, dvd+rw, dvd-ram are competing standards which are rewritable.

dvd-ram drives have been around for a while. dvd-rw and dvd+rw drives should be available by the end of the year.

The only DVD-R drive I know of that is out on the market right now is the Pioneer A03. The MSRP is about $1000, but you can find it for around $700-$800.

I think the drives in the new Apples are pioneer drives, but as for if they use the DVD-RW, DVD+RW or DVD-RAM standard, no idea.
