I have an Emachine 6807 and the DVD r/w just quit working. I spoke w/emachines, no joy. I would like to know what steps to perform to try and resurrect this puppy. I would also like to know if anyone has a tech manual for this machine. Emachine tech support says they don't have one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you can get new ones for about $40.

I guess you could try a laser cleaner but you were not specific about the problem:

does it not read/write dvds,
is it recognized by the OS or BIOS,
did you check devise manager for issues
did you try to reinstall it

The drive spins up but does not read DVD's, mp3, etc. Where can I find a replacement drive, emachines won't tell me they want me to send the machine to them for repair.

Yes, same thing happened with my 6807. One day the DVD-R just stopped reading anything and everything tha ti threw into it. I dont' know what caused it. I always took care of my machine like it was my first and only child. The disc still spins, but it refuses to read the disc through windows. It still lights up and whatnot. I have not bothered to check the laser or anything like that. I think i'm just going to replace the DVDR with a simple CDr combo... but i'm not sure where i can get my grubby little paws on that kind of hardware.

Weird eh?
