DVD writer no longer functioning

After downloading WinXP SP2 I can't use my Sony Dru510a. I have downloaded the latest firmware and I am using the latest version of Nero. The drive shows up in My Computer but the computer can't read a disk in the drive. I tried uninstalling the drive and letting it reinstall to no avail. I've contacted both Sony and MS and they point at one another. Sony says they don't provide new drivers because the drive is PnP and MS just says oh you must need a new driver. I have ordered a new DVD writer but fear this problem may continue. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?
 
My Sony DRU 500A died after installing SP1. I used it as an excuse to purchase a DL burner. Don't quite know what the problem was, but it woudn't read a disk and couldn't burn a DVD for more than a few seconds before failure. I still have the drive, so I might do some testing later on.
