DVD Writer Disappeared

All of this is concerning a Ben-Q DW1655 running on a Windows Vista Ultimate x64 installation, with an Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard.

I was burning a data DVD using Nero. It finished, and so I went to load another blank DVD+R to make another one. Nero kept asking me to insert a disc.

All of a sudden, in between finishing on disc and starting another, windows stopped recognizing my DVD burner. It was no longer located in My Computer, no longer in device manager. It still has power, as I was loading/unloading dvds.

I restarted and checked my bios. It is detected in bios, no problems. It opens and closes when I'm in bios. But now, when I come into windows, the drive no longer has power. It doesn't open/close in windows, but opens before it's loaded. Awesome.

Ideas or suggestions anyone? I've fiddled with the wires to make sure they're snug. I haven't touched the jumpers at all, the computer has been running the drive since September of 06 with no problems on whatever jumper setting the drive came with. Nothings changed... this all happened mid operation. I've had vista on my computer for a month, so nothing new there either.

Any help is appreciated.

I've gotten into safe mode and it detects the drive, and the drive works with media in it, but I don't know where to go from here. Is there a next step?

I've seen a problem such as this before. To fix it, I did the following:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Click on the start menu.

If this is a Vista machine in the search box type in ?regedit? without the quotation marks.

Maximize the HKLM and then go ahead and browse until you reach the key listed above.

In the right panel you?ll see something along the lines of ?UpperFilter? and ?LowerFilter? you want to click on each ?filter? key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.

Restart Windows."

Worked like a charm for me...

When looking for those registry values I run into a bit of a problem, there are 13 or so {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folders, a couple of which have upper filter values and lower filter values.

I believe all the upperfilter and lowerfilter jazz is added by nero... Just backup the registry and try to delete all the filter entries in all the applicable keys.
