i put a DVD into my drive, and windows doesnt recognize anything being in the drive.

any ideas?

i am using WinXP, i have reinstalled the WinDVD software, as well as the DVD patch that the windows help sends you to.

i can use my DVD software to play DVD?s in the past, so i dont know why it wouldn't work

is there a new type of encoding on new DVD?s that wouldn?t play in a 2 year old DVD drive.

Not that this helps a bit....

I never could get Windvd to work in my xp machine. I also tried all of the patches, updates, etc... Finally just gave up and am running PowerDVD.

There are some DVDs that some drives just don't play too well. I know I have had some problems with dvd-9 discs (the larger, higher density dual-layered ones). Specifically The Abyss, The Patriot, Apocalypse Now Redux. About 4/5 times the drive will not admit there is any disc in the drive. But in general, nothing has changed with DVDs and formatting in the last two years.

What has changed between the time it worked and now? I couldn't read it from your post. The install of Windows XP? The Reinstall of WinDVD? Does it not work with all DVDs or just some? Does the drive read regular cds?

its a regular dvd / cd drive

reads dvd's and nothing has really changed, which is what bugged me,

windvd in XP have worked before.
