DVD vs Portable Hard Drive

I have a HP Pavillion dv600 laptop with a 1.80 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU , 2GB memory , Vista Home 32 Premium and integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 . It has a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-851S ATA DVD drive . I am considering getting a portable hard drive like the IOmega eGo 320 GB . This connects to the USB 2.0 , I understand . Would this be significantly slower than the DVD drive ? Could I run a video off it ?
Thanks .

Much faster.
A 24x DVD drive gives ~30MB/s. Yours probably is only a 16x.
An external HDD should approach 30MB/s fairly easily, and the USB2.0 connection is usually the limiting factor, not the drive itself.

Realistically your DVD drive will be doing sub 20MB/s and have poor seek and random reads, while a HDD will both have faster transfer rates and much better seek times.

I watch movies on my notebook which are stored on an external USB 2 HDD all the time. If you intend to watch commercial movies/videos, then make sure that you are able to decrypt them first.
