Using Fairuse, what is a good rule of thumb for file size for a xvid file per hour of movie? I like to keep the AC3 digital track, so please factor this into the equation. Or average KBits/S?

Also, does Output Video Size matter? Should I always choose 720x480, which I believe is DVD?

Also, for playback on a television, should I use Divx, Xvid or X.264?

Thanks!

xvid is the ebst of both worlds...great quality and good encode times.

h.264 is the undisputed king but the encoding times are practically viscious on even the fastest of machines (the a64 FX iirc can do less than 10fps:( )and it requires BEST of a PC to paly smoothly

I use xvid using auto gordian knot. I useually make 1gb files so the image looks good. I'm happy so far.

there used to be a document floating around put out by some release group detailing what file size corresponds to time.

Well that'll teach me to search...

After some trial and error and playing with the variables, I've found that the number that matters--assuming sound quality and other factors equal and that videos are watched at full screen--is:

bitrate adjusted for the effective resolution

...where the effective resolution is the resolution of the video adjusted for the resolution of the monitor you'll be playing. The adjustment is the fraction of the full screen your video will be using.

You can find this number through the formula:

Sv / Tv x e^(-ABS(ln((Wm/Hm)/(Wv/Hv))))

...where the variables are:

Sv = File size of video
Tv = Time of video
Wm = Width of monitor
Hm = Height of monitor
Wv = Width of video
Hv = Height of video

Using DiVX and my 1440 x 900 monitor, my target value for this equation is 10...
