DVD to Xvid program/resources?

I've been doing some reading and can only seem to find guides for ripping DVD-to-Xvid in the case of a full length movie.

What if I just wanted to rip a bonus scene? Does anyone know of any guide that caters to that? Or, equivalently, any single software package (preferably free) that does this? Everything I've read seems to involve some suite of several programs like DVD-Decryptor, FlaskMPG, VirtualDub, DVDShrink, etc etc. If it's at all possible, I'd like to minimize the number of programs necessary.

You can check out AutoGK, the dumbed-down, hands-free version of the Gordian Knot encoding package (both of which are free). I don't know if AutoGK has the functionality to encode small clips, but if it encodes a full movie you can simply cut it up in Virtualdub. The full GK can definitely do clips, but it's basically a convenient frontend that incorporates several other programs, like DVD Decrypter (ripper), BeSweet (audio encoder), AviSynth (frameserver), etc.

with autogk, you can do just a clip if that's all you decrypt from the disk when you use dvd decrypter before you start with autogk.

Actually AutoGK/Gordian Knot includes the tools to do it quite easily. When you load up DGIndex/DVD2AVI you can select start and endpoints. Since the rest of GK uses the resulting *.d2v file to determine what it encodes, this should meet your needs nicely. It's only a matter of selecting the proper size/etc.

This works fine for GK, but does AutoGK allow you to control how DGIndex behaves? I didn't think it did.

Hrm... could be. It is AutoGK. I know regular GK allows you to do it. It's pretty straightforward, with directions in the actual interface. (Seriously, stuff like "only press this button next to this text if you want to do so-and-so")
