DVD to MPEG/AVI...

I have a DVD that I want to convert into a format playable on my computer. I have both the original DVD and the ISO file for it. But I don't know how to utilize these files in a way so that I can watch the movie on my computer without having the DVD in my DVD drive. Any suggestions, por favor?

thanks,
febuld

either mount the .iso file or put the dvd in the drive, use dvd decrypter to rip it the files to your hard drive, then use xmpeg to reencode to your desired format.

will i have to convert each file separately? or will i be able to combine the different files into one continuous file?

Check the easy guide at Doom9.org.

You will probably want to re-rip the DVD though. And this assumes you want to have it as XViD to save some disk space, otherwise you can just mount the ISO and use a DVD player to play the DVD.

would Multimedia Converter Alpha 3 (from sourceforge.net) do the trick also? how does it compare to AutoGK and XMPEG?

i tried using xmpeg, but during the conversion, my hard drive gets filled up! i have thirty free gigs, and that should be enough. I ripped the dvd, and then used xmpeg to convert. Am i missing a step in between?

nevermind that...
which components of AutoGK are necessary for it to function? I don't want to install unnecessary junk...

I can't get that method to work, xmpeg just crashes my computer. really annoying, since i can't find anything else to do this.. I need this media to be playable on any computer's basic CD-ROM driv. coming from a simple 20 minutes video on a DVD.. this is driving me crazy.

Try ripping the files to your hard drive with DVD Decryptor (IFO mode, and select witch part of the DVD you want), rename the .VOB files to .MPG. Then, use Windows Media Encoder (for converting a single file) or Windows Movie Maker (for converting and combining multiple files together) and create .WMV files.

.WMV files will be playable on any windows PC.
