I am wanting to copy a lot of my popular dvds to hard disk to use on my HTPCs in the house. I kinda want to make it like a video on demand type thing and wanted to know what the best format would be to copy the dvd file into on the disk as well as what the best freeware\cheapware software could be used.
Thanks in advance :)

DVD Decrypter for copying the DVDs to the hard drive

If space is an issue, you could always convert the DVD to Divx/Xvid using AutoGK or FairuseWizard.

the after you've ripped them all, GB-PVR is a great tool for watching.

I needed to do the same thing, and used DVD Decrypter to rip them to the drive, then AutoGK to convert them into Xvid. Turned out great.

Hard drive space is cheap these days...After running through DVD Decrypter, I use DVD Shrink to strip out the menus and save as an ISO file. GB-PVR has an option to auto mount the ISO's with daemon tools.

I use mine for all of my kids movies....its great to have them all on-line with no menus, previews or comercials.

Can't you just use DVD Shrink for the ripping part too? It has Decryption built in... And I think it let's you save it to the hard drive. so possibly no need for Decrypter.

I ripped all my retail DVDs to HDD using decrypter into DVD9 or whatever space they took
HDD space is so cheap who cares.

My reasoning was the same as yours... except I use XBMC.
I will admit I also compressed many to XVID with some high-bit settings. I freaking hate DVD menus.. just give me the movie.

DVD Shrink works OK for ripping most of the time, But prefer to use DVD decrypter first so there is no question. For kids stuff and older movies DVD Shrink is a safe bet.

DVDShrink fails on some of the new discs being produced. Thats why you need DVD Decrypter. Though even that is failing sometimes now. DVDFabDecrypter has solved most of those issues that I've come across.

Does anyone have a guide on the best way to use this stuff??? I know that someone around here wrote a guide on ripping CDs with EAC and LAme and that's one of my bibles now. Just wanted to know if anyone has done this for DVD ripping and such?
