Highly recommend this SITE.

Its one of the most useful sites on this topic and has countless tutorials and a great forum for when u run into trouble. Using their tut's I did my first rip using Gordian Knot... which is a great prog once you get the hang of it.

I use dvd decrypter to rip the DVD to .Vob filrs on the hard drive and Vidomi to convert those .Vob files to DivX. Vidomi is very easy for a first time user, go Here for there own guide or go Here for other guides on "how to".

HTH.

I like Xmpeg 4.2 for DVD to Divx for converting. If you have a Pentium 4 2Ghz or an AMD Xp 1900+ and above, you can encode faster than realtime. However, make sure you use YUV color instead of RGB. this helps a lot and makes your encoding time much faster.

In case you need a more detailed guide, it can be found here on Tom's Hardware
