DVD to Divx? Going on a long trip...

Can anyone help me convert my DVDs into DIVX movies? I am going to europe soon and i will be there for a few weeks and doing a bit of traveling from country to country.. so i was hoping I could bring some DVDs with me but without having to carry around extra baggage (also they dont let you watch movies on the airplane unless its off the harddrive)

Ive tried a couple programs so far but it seems the dvds have copyright protection so I cant save them to my pc.. other programs ive used convert to other formats but no avi/divx format... does anyone have a good program they can suggest? I just want a simple DVD -> DIVX and hopefully a free one?

Is it too much of a hassle to do this or am I missing something? Ive looked and looked and cant find anything 🙁

Thanks for any help

BTW this is legal right? I own the copies and dont plan on sending them to anyone... I think when you purchase a dvd you purchase the complete rights to watch it in any form?? I dont want to be creating problems for anandtech if im asking for illegal advice here hehe

Do whatever you want as long as you are not trying to sell the DIVX copies as far as I'm concerned. Who is going to know anyway. Relax.

Yes, it's perfectly legal so long as you own the original DVD you are ripping from. AutoGK is good for this. If your playing back on a laptop or pc, and the format doesn't necessarily have to be DivX, I would recommend using Nero Recode (comes with Nero 6 suite) which is very easy to use and encodes better quality at lower bitrates. Either way you'll have to rip the .vob files from the DVD using DVD Decrypter first.

if you own the copies and u have no itention of public display or retailing, then i believe its legit, If ur canadian then its even legit to copy it and give them out to your friends <g> RIAA is having a cow about this... Anyhow a few good places to look is

VCDHelp.com <-- thats where i learned how to do all the video editing and stuff
Doom9.com <-- great site also with lots of info.

There is however another approach only if u have LOTS and LOTS of Hard drive space. U can always use DVD-Decryptor, if u were lucky to get it b4 there site closed, and make a image of the DVD on your hard drive. Then use Daemon Tools to mount in the image on your laptop. This i think is the only way u can preserve the menu option and extra's incase ur that kind of person

Is it legal? I thought using DVD Decryptor, even for personal use, to rip/decrypt a dvd would be circumventing the copy protection.

In any case, you can create a DVD image (*.iso, *.img, etc) and mount it. Or you can rip the files to get *.vob files. They'll take the same amount of space. The difference is that many software DVD players will let you play DVD files directly from disk (PowerDVD, for example). The menus are intact using both options. VLC Player can also handle both options and it's free.

In the early days, FlaskMPEG was the tool to use to turn DVDs to Divx. But it's probably not used anymore. If you have space to spare temporarily, I'd just rip to disk and avoiding the Divx compression process (it can take hours). Each DVD is probably no more than ~7GB each anyway.

Gordian Knot (for diehards like me who like to do it fully hands on)
or AutoGK (essentially the same thing, but more automated).

I either use an old version of FairUse Wizard or an app called PocketDVD Studio (for my Palm Treo but it converts for any resolution/size anyway). One-click conversion rules.

They don't let you watch movies unless it's off the harddrive? Who told you that?

I watch DVDs every week on the plane

That is simply not true... of all the flights I have been on I have NEVER heard of such a rule... If this is true, why do they rent out portable DVD players at the airports for travelers?

i think he's right, i dont see how DVD drives can be ban'd when Laptops arent. Id expect a laptop hard drive to cause more interference then a DVD drive would.

😛

Where the hell did you get that from? DVD Drives are fine...Why would a DVD Drive not be allowed but a CD player is? I've never heard of DVD drives not being allowed, and I've flown ALOT.
