dvd to avi

I need to take something off a dvd and turn it into an avi. Is there any software that is cheap, or free that is good?

Xilisoft Dvd Ripper has always worked for me in the past.

AVI as in Divx or Xvid encoding?

Fairuse Wizard (I think the free version limits you to 700MB)

well im looking to get a dvd and convert it so i can put it on my mp3 player. Not sure what the best format is

yea but that cost 35 bucks. Id rather get something thats free

I'd try Fairuse then first. The free version should be fine for you and it's got templates for the smaller resolution videos to be put on iPods and other players.
