DVD to AVI or MP4

I have decided to put all my DVD's on my WHS. What is the recommended program to convert them to AVI or MP4 or ? "What do you reommend as the best format"

I was looking at MakeMKV for my BlueRays. Can anyone recommend better?

I would perfer free but if the best is somthing you pay for then that is alright too.

thanks!

MakeMKV for BD is amazing, but it doesn't do subtitles (forced or otherwise), unless they are burned into the movie. So you'll have to get something else for those.

Honestly, I would just use DVDShrink to rip your DVD's uncompressed to ISO (just the main movie).

But if not, Fairuse wizard should do what you need. I believe MakeMKV also works for DVD's too though.

I use to use DVDshrink but thought I might not work with new DVD's since it has not been updated since 2005. Not sure if thats an issue though?

isos, dvds not really worth the encode time/effort.
avi is inferior, you'd use h264 mkv or mp4
but still a lot of trouble, esp if there are some interlaced content or whatever, its just not a batch and forget type of thing.
