DVD Stuttering Problem...

Hi, I've got the Toshiba 12x40x DVD (SDM1402 or something) and it's fine reading CDs, but when I try watching DVDs, it plays fine for a while and then just stutters and then stops altogether. I've tried cleaning it, using it on a friend's computer, and Win2k and Win98se, and it still does the same thing.

My motherboard is a MSI 6309, and my friend's was a BE6...<sigh> Is it just a broken drive? Thanks.

Did you try with a different DVD? the DVD you were testing with may be bad. The drive also may be bad. But before coming to that conclusion check certina thing like if your Ultra DMA is enabled in Bios and also in windows. Try running it as secondary master. I am guessing you want to use the primary master for your boot up hard drive. If you are using it for secoandary master check if you have a secondary slave and if there is any check what mode it is operating. If it operates in PIO mode the DVD will also operate in PIO even if you enable Ultra DMA.

Probably it is not a DMA problem. That might be the case if it didn't completely stop working.

Just as a check to see if it is the DVD, try another one (one that is known to be good). If it exhibits the same problems, it might be the drive. Overheating drive? Does it stop in the same place or after the same amount of real playing time regardless of DVD?

I have tried different DVDs, DMA and PIO both stutter, my system is a P3-750 oc'ed to 967, tried not overclocking. It has 256 MB RAM, and my friend's was a P3 600 with 256 MB of RAM as well. I guess it's RMA time for me.

I'll assume your using a software dvd player....just an assumption here, have ya tried using different software, like off the top of my head Win-DVD or something else....there are different programs each with their own little quirks....or am I way off base here?....just something ya may wanna try before you return DVD....curious to know what video card ya using?

Yeah, I have an ATI Radeon, I tried Power DVD and ATI's DVD player also. But it also stuttered on my friend's computer, which has a TNT2 Ultra AND a decoder card, so I can almost pretty much rule out everything but the drive, right? =) Well, we both have SB Lives, but his drive doesn't stutter (it's a 1212 instead of a 1402).
