Try another DVD disc. It could be corrupted.

Other possiblities are DVD drive not properly aligned that when attampting to access a certain portion, it just can't read. When you say the computer just sit there, can you at least click start? If the computer is completely lock, try this, immediately after you boot, attempt to access somewhere beyond the 45 min mark.

If you're able to access, then your system is probably overheating. If your system does not really lock up and you can actually click and run other program but only the DVD player is lock then your problem is within the Player software, DVD drive or DVD disc.

You can eliminate other possiblities by trying another DVD disc. If you have access to another DVD drive, try swapping and see if you have the problem.

Goodluck.

the computer doesn't lock up, i can do other things, just that the dvd movie hangs around 45 min when i was watching shawshank redemption, i tried with toystory 2, hangs around 30 or so minutes, i don't think its the movies...by the way, i'm using hollywood plus decoder and dvd station player...it worked fine before in win98...i dunno what's wrong but i would like to finish watching shawshank redemption...oh yea, after i reboot, i still can't access the chapters that's after the 45 mins...is it my drive??

Is it feasible for you to remove the hardware decoder and test using software decoding, like WinDVD or PowerDVD? That at least would enable you to rule out the decoder card as the culprit.

But, to tell you the truth, this sounds like a hardware / firmware issue with the DVD drive itself. Some drives have had troubles changing layers when reading DVDs, and that's something that happens around 45 minutes on most movies. As a matter of fact, I think I remember reading about a firmware issue with some Toshiba drives, though the one I'm thinking about was, I believe, an 8X drive. You might check to see if there's a firmware update for your particular drive.

How did you install W2K, as an upgrade over Win98 or as a clean installation? Have you updated all of your drivers with W2K-specific drivers? How about the DVD player software?

Hope you get it sorted out.

Jim
