Hi all,

It seems recurrent that DVD drives bring me back to Anandtech forums.

My last DVD drive gave up on me in its 13th month of warranty (too bad...) Pioneer by the way (slot in) and I have bought a replacement Sony DVD drive reference 1211. My problem is that I have tried several DVD software players and all are seeming to play back with difficulty without the film being interrupted with half second sound and image pauses every 4-5 seconds, which you can imagine is infuriating. As I have tried several software players, I am starting to think that the problem is coming from my DVD player, which just happens to be installed on the same IDE cable as the HP cd writer (DVD master, CDR slave). The rest of my config is below:

Athlon 1GHz
396mB Ram
45 GB HD IBM ATA 100
ABIT KT7 RAID supporting UDMA ATA 100
DVD Sony 1211 (firmware flashed for multizoning)
HP CD Writer Plus 4x2x24x
Guillemot XP sound card
Win 2K
Cable internet connection via network card.

Any ideas?

tell me u don't have DMA enabled on your rom device.

to enable/check...

start>settings>control panel>system>device manager>disk drives

from there, it can be checked in two ways, depending on the bus master drivers you have installed...anyway, check the properties of your hdd devices and see if there's a little check box that says DMA that's checked off or not...check it if it's not.

otherwise, the other way is to simply check properties under hard disk controllers and see if it says DMA mode as opposed to PIO for the channel that your dvd is located on..
