DVD slowing down my system

Well this seems weird to me.
When I install my DVD-Rom in my system, it slwos down to a crawl. Windows tells me that my hard drive is running in compatibility mode, and takes at least 3 minutes to boot, as opposed to my usual 14 seconds.
As soon as I remove the DVD, it boots like it used to.
The dvd is an Afreey 8x, which had always worked well for me since I bought it, but when I upgraded my system, from a Compaq, that's when the trouble started to happen (The drive wasn't a Compaq, I went out and bought it).
I find it real strange that it would work fine in the Compaq but not in two other systems.
I even tried using a separate PCI IDE atapter, but it didn't help. When the DVD was in, it was slow, when it wasn't, it was fast.

System 1:
MSI K7T266Pro2+
Thunderbird 1.2ghz
256MB PC2100
GeForce3 Ti200/Radeon SDR 32mb (it had the Radeon, then both, and then just the ti200)
Diamond Monster MX400 sound
Realtek network card
Quantum Fireball 20gb drive
Polaroid 48x CDRW

System 2:
Iwill XP333-R
Athlon XP2400+
256MB PC2100
GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB
Soundblaster Audigy w/ firewire
Realtek NIC
Maxtor 60gb HD
Liteon 24x10x40 CDRW

I've found older Afreey DVD roms don't really play nice w/ other ide devices on the same channel as they are... I had a 10X drive and it caused HDDs to work in Pio mode when on the same ide channel and it also caused any CD burner on the same channel not to function in windows. The only thing I could get to play nice w/ this drive was normal cd-rom drives. Your best bet is to put the Afreey drive on it's own channel or pair it up w/ a normal cd-rom, it may work w/ some burners (not sure on your 8x model) but I wouldn't count on it. Also I was never able to get the drive to function as a slave w/out causing anything else on it's channel not to function properly, it needed to be the master... I hope this is helpful.... 🙂

Well I tried running it on its own, removing the burner and having the DVD as master, and it doesn't seem to help at all.
Windows tells me my HD is in compatibility mode, which is disgustingly slow.
