When backing up and reauthoring a movie I was wondering which one of these to check? DTS seems to take up about 1/2 the space as AC3 so if you cleck both or just DTS you have you use more compression. I've been using AC3 only but was wondering what other more knowledable people were doing? Any difference between DTS and AC3 quality wise and is going for less compression the better trade off?

I think you have your stuff backwards, DTS is the higer quality audio track but it is usually triple the size of the ac3 track. Are you expanding the AC3 track and unchecking the other language versions and comment tracks? If you have a 5.1 home theatre that will recognize the DTS track you may want to keep it at the cost of more compression, otherwise there is no need for it.

If your only gonna keep the DTS track make sure your stuff can decode it. Friend did that and when we went to play the movie he had no sound at all.

DTS, always. However, I have a 6.1 Onkyo receiver which can decode DTS and a pretty decent 6.1 surround system. If you're running your movies right out your TV speakers, then you have no need for DTS whatsoever, it just takes up space on your disc.

While DTS is better audio than DD5.1, its not *THAT* much better and unless you have a good speaker system often times you won't even hear a difference. When using dvdshrink, I always dump the DTS track because it just takes up too much room. I'd rather use that space for better picture quality.
