DVD selection: El Mariachi / Desperado

So I just figured out that Once Upon a Time in Mexico is the sequel to Desperado, & it didn't take much digging to find that El Mariachi was the first.

I guess I'd better get them so I'll have seen both by the time it hits theaters.

The choices:

Desperado Superbit - I'm a big fan of the Superbit concept, I HATE useless extras that reduce the space for quality audio & video. All I want is DTS, an extremely good quality anamorphic widescreen transfer, & a high quality anamorphic trailer. That's it, nothing more.

Desperado / El Mariachi Special Editions - Both movies, <$21 - Hard to beat, but it's not Superbit.

El Mariachi Special Edition - I would do this & Desperado Superbit

Anybody own any of these? I'm looking for the best audio & video quality.

I watched Desperado last night on TNT.

I always think it's dumb when Banderas gets those two other guys from his band and they come in all badass or whatever and promptly get killed.

I was unaware that El Mariachi was a prequel. I had thought that Desperado was just loosely based on it.

Hard to say...the Superbit is nice, but more expensive...the boxed set is nice, at that price.

Regardless, buy them, one way or another. Great stuff. 🙂

(I chose Superbit)

El Mariachi was very bad, IMO. Especially since it lacked budget and is poorly dubbed.

Personally, I'd just get the Desperado Super-bit and forget about El Mariachi.

I haven't seen either, so I don't know... I've seen a few things that make me think Desperado was pretty much a big budget remake of the original.

I didn't know that you had not seen the movie. I would have not posted that "spoiler" otherwise. 😱

I'd get the boxed set. I can't imagine SuperBit would do much more for that film. El Mariachi was pretty good, ignore Amish...we all know his taste in movies is teh sux0rz! And, watch it in Spanish with subtitles.

Then again, I own the boxset, too 😉

Rent El Mariachi, then buy the Desperado Superbit. El Mariachi is worth watching mostly because it's amazing what they did on such a miniscule budget.

However, the video/audio quality is obviously quite poor so I don't know that it's a DVD worth owning.

Loved Desperado, not a fan of 'El Mariachi. Very, very cheesy. Desperado was just a much more polished and "watchable" movie IMHO. It had a few entertaining moments, but overall it would be something that you'd laugh at on late night TNN or USA during their "crappy movie" timeslot. The only thing that it has going for it is that it has the name "Robert Rodriguez" in the credits, and has a lot of hype surrounding it.

Superbit is really a waste for this movie.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say....

I didn't like Desperado at all but loved El Mariachi. Desperado didn't advance the story and was full of 'nothingness'.
I'd buy the compilation just to get El Mariachi and a 'free' copy of Desperado.

I have the box set. Superbit would be nice, but for a movie like Desperado I don't think I'd care too much. And El Mariachi was an amazing movie considering it was made for less than 10k dollars.

I give more weight to the name "Steve Buscemi" in the credits. 😀

Viper,

The differences between the special edition and Superbit version of Desperado will only be noticable on a good HDTV or HDprojector. If this is what you own, by all means get the SB version. 🙂
