I am unable to use my DVD-RW on my Dell Dimension 4700 (with latest XP version). For the last 2 days, I've gone from it functioning like a DVD-ROM drive, to working briefly only to get the BSOD. All I am trying to do is back up some files on DVD-RWs. I've been doing this process for years with no issues. All of a sudden, I am unable to write files to DVD-RWs. I did add a new hard drive to the system a few weeks ago.
The program I use is called Sonic DLA, which is supplied by Dell. At first, when I removed then reinstalled it, I was able to write to DVD-RWs, only when I tried to eject the DVD, I got a message saying some other process had the files locked (there was no other process), and then when I forced an eject, I got the BSOD.
I have tried to update this application from updates from the Dell website, but that has only made things worse. With the latest upgrade, I got to a point where Windows would not start, so I had to do a System Restore (first time ever).
I've tried using Easy CD Creator, but that will not install on my Dell.
I am somewhat knowledgable about computers, but this one has me stumped more than any other ever.
Any suggestions including other software to use, would be appreciated.
Lost on me is why this is not something XP handles itself. Why do I need a 3rd party application to write files to my DVD drive?
